Coral Reef Conservation project

Coral Reef Conservation Project

This co-operation agreement is part of the Embassy's 2008 objectives achieve climate security by promoting a faster transition to a sustainable, low carbon global economy and to support Dominican efforts on Climate Change, especially carbon reduction. With this agreement Reef Check will install a Buoy system in "La Caleta" diving sites, preventing the destruction of the reef due to the use of diving boat's anchors.

This will also delimit the under water National Park facilitating the protection and recuperation of this important ecosystems that are being greatly affected by climate change. The British Embassy and Reef Check are working together to resolve local problems with global consequences.

This Project also includes workshops that would benefit both the local community and dive industry. The focus of the first workshop was on the ecology of reefs and the importance they have in providing income (via tourism) and food (through sustainable fishing practices). The Second workshop is focused on the installation and maintenance of the buoys, local fishermen are going to help Reef Check voluntaries to install the buoys and they are responsible for the maintenance according to a protocol designed by Reef Check.
