Signature of the Memorandum of Understanding for support to the Dominican Authorities in the Negotiations towards Copenhagen (03/09/2009)
The British Embassy in Santo Domingo and the Consejo Nacional para el Cambio Climático y el Mecanismo de Desarrollo Limpio (CNCCMDL), signed a memorandum of understanding to give support to the council in the drafting and socialisation of the Country Position towards the negotiations in Copenhagen to be held in Denmark in December 2009.
Mr. Omar Ramírez Tejada, Vice-President of the Council and Scott Melling, Deputy Head of Mission in Santo Domingo signed the agreement with Dr. Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, as Honourable witness. The initiative contemplates economic support to the project with an investment by Embassy of DOP1,420,000.00 (one million four hundred and twenty thousand Dominican pesos).
The initiative will help develop socialisation workshops to discuss with civil society and stakeholders the negotiation topics to be discussed in Copenhagen, and also to know about the point of view of the national stakeholders, so that they now the tendencies and implications of the proposals that are being discussed on an international level.
The National Council of Climate Change was created on September 2008 and has allowed that the Dominican Republic bring to an institutional level the talks about climate change in the country and abroad. The Council is presided by the President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández Reyna and it members are: Ministry of Environment (SEMARENA), Ministry of Economy, Planing and Development (SEEPyD), Ministry of Treasury, Ministry of Agriculture (SEA), Ministry of Health (SESPAS), Ministry of Commerce (SEIC) and National Energy Commission (CNE), amongst others.
